Organised by brothers Manu and Michiel Beers and ID&T, the festivals inauguration event happened on the 14th August 2005.įor the first four editions, Tomorrowland was still very much finding its feet and working out its identity. That said, we've decided to look back over all the themes since the festival's inception to see how they got to this point. The globally adored festival celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2019, and after three years away the fast-approaching next edition is nearly here, extended to three entire rapturous weekends for what is bound to be their most historic moment to date. Nowadays though, the annual theme is a huge part of the magic, dictating the incredible MainStage design, the immersive production and more or less everything that isn't the lineup of dance music megastars. It's hard to imagine it now, but early editions didn't have the all-encompassing themes and engrossing mythology that help to shape the whole experience. Once upon a time, Tomorrowland was just a music festival.
